CIO Guide to Social Media

Social media’s impact on the enterprise is still unclear.  For every compelling story about Dell or Starbucks there are stories about wasted time and security concerns.  What is clear is that the new ways of socializing electronically are here to stay - until a newer, cooler, more exciting once comes along to take its place (MySpace anyone?).

It is also unclear who in the enterprise will emerge as the champion for social media.  Maybe it will be a combination of people and roles?  The CIO and IT leadership have a great opportunity to be part of the solution.  I’ve sorted through hundreds of articles and web sites in building this CIO Guide to Social Media - I hope you find it useful.  Please send me your comments and suggestions.

If there is one thing to do to understand the importance and permanence of Enterprise 2.0, especially re: marketing, read David Meerman Scott. In book form read The New Rules of Marketing & PR.

You can start on-line with this blog post but WATCH THE VIDEO from his keynote at the BMA: http://www.webinknow.com/2009/12/social-media-marketing-explained-in-61-words.html. Its a 45 minute talk. Watch, especially, the opening 4 questions. I can’t imagine any sensible business group answering those four questions and NOT including social media in their strategy. The only question is how to get off the dime and stop making mistakes/wasting time.

This is a great compilation of articles. I am currently leading the effort to implement social media for enterprise use using SocialText platform to improve communication and collaboration across the enterprise and be a platform to provide innovative ideas and solutions. The article on ‘CIO guide on technology innovation’ is very informative.
